A very overdue recap of my MBFWA week. As I mentioned before, this year I landed an exclusive role as the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia Insider which meant I was hosting the live stream which was being broadcasted online and at a special venue in Sydney. I interviewed everyone from Australian designers, editors, celebrities to photographers, make up artists and bloggers, most of whom I call dear friends which made the experience so much easier.
With MBFWA coming around so quickly I didn’t really have a chance to document this journey how I would have hoped. Luckily with the help of the supportive production team around me, we managed to remember to take a few snaps in between interviews and filming. Hopefully this gives you an idea of what was involved during the week. I think some of my favourite interviews had to be with Rob Mills and Edwina McCann, editor of Vogue Australia who seems to be one of the most gracious ladies in the industry who has always been so supportive of the digital arena, and in particular, bloggers.
I would be lying if I said the thought of this task didn’t make me nervous, that I was calm and collected and knew exactly what I was doing. But there’s no other way to learn than to jump head first into the deep end. To push yourself out of your comfort zone and to inevitably make valuable mistakes (or what I like to call learning curves) which you can only learn, adapt and evolve from. After all, that’s how Gary Pepper began when I decided to quit my full-time job to launch my own online store and blog back in 2009.
I guess the biggest reason I agreed to this role was because I not only wanted to prove to myself that I could do it, but also to show my audience, fellow bloggers, the industry and every critic out there that some bloggers aren’t just bloggers, nor girls who just stand around taking photos of themselves. Given the chance, we are so much more. We are stylists, we are models, we are photographers, we are consultants, we are digital strategists, we are PR agencies, we are writers, we are TV presenters, and we are a brand and a business that we’ve often built from scratch. The only part we lack sometimes are opportunities, but given the chance we can even surprise ourselves with what we are capable of. From what I learnt so far, you can chase opportunities, or you can create them.
A special thank you to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia for trusting me with such a task. And to Evan, Roger, Fabio, Mark and the whole production team from Rightster for basically holding my hand and walking this first-timer through everything, as well as Maddison my manager for keeping me so calm – I couldn’t have survived this week without any of you! So that’s a wrap… See you all at MBFWA next year!
